**Second-Half Fightback Falls Short as Staveley MW Lose at Harrowby United**
Staveley MW’s first away trip of the season ended in a 2-1 defeat at Harrowby United, with a vastly improved second-half performance unable to overturn the damage done during a difficult opening 45 minutes.
Wearing their new sunstream yellow away kit for the first time, Staveley made a bright enough start. Tim Whittaker was fouled while clearing the ball before Bobbie White delivered an inviting cross that found Jack Deakin, although an unfortunate bobble made the chance difficult to convert.
Harrowby’s intentions were clear from the outset, repeatedly looking to exploit space with direct through balls. A dangerous run from Jacob Boyes ended with a shot that flashed narrowly wide, serving as an early warning.
Staveley responded with a good opportunity of their own when Archie White showed neat footwork inside the penalty area, shifting the ball onto his left foot before forcing a fine save from Harrowby goalkeeper Ben Martin.
Moments later, however, the hosts took the lead. Another well-weighted through ball split the Staveley defence and this time Jacob Boyes made no mistake, finishing confidently to put the home side 1-0 ahead.
The visitors gradually began to settle into the contest and produced their best spell of the first half around the quarter-hour mark. A flowing move earned a corner, from which a back-post header was brilliantly kept out by Ben Martin with a point-blank save.
Just as Staveley appeared to be growing into the game, they gifted Harrowby a second goal. Trying to play out from the back, an under hit back pass presented Sam Wright with a simple opportunity that he gratefully accepted to double the home side’s advantage after 21 minutes.
There was little of note from Staveley for much of the remainder of the half. Tom Wood fashioned a shooting opportunity inside the area after cutting inside, but his effort drifted well off target.
Staveley were then fortunate not to fall even further behind. Mitchell Leivers was forced to race from his goal and head the ball clear outside the penalty area before quickly recovering to produce an excellent save with his feet from the follow-up attack.
Freddie Norris replaced an injured Tim Whittaker shortly before the break as Staveley looked for fresh impetus.
Joel Ward and Tom Wood were both shown yellow cards early in the second half, but there was a noticeable improvement in the visitors’ intensity after the restart.
Joel Ward made way for Carter Tingle just before the hour mark, and only minutes later Staveley gave themselves hope. Jack Deakin injected real pace into an attack before squaring across goal for Tom Wood to finish calmly, reducing the deficit to 2-1.
With momentum now firmly on their side, Staveley pushed for an equaliser. Deakin again was at the heart of the move, turning sharply before driving a shot narrowly wide of the post.
The visitors continued to dominate proceedings. Kurtis Turner battled superbly to keep possession alive in the corner before the ball fell kindly to Archie White, whose effort sailed over the crossbar. Crosses were now flooding into the Harrowby penalty area as Staveley searched desperately for a leveller.
Nathan Moss replaced Tom Wood for the closing stages, but Staveley’s task became more difficult when Archie White was booked before Charlie Wood was shown a yellow card and sent to the sin bin with little over ten minutes remaining.
JJ Cutts was introduced in stoppage time for Charlie Wood, while Dan Grierson also entered the referee’s notebook as the game drew to a close.
Despite an excellent response after the interval, Staveley were unable to find the goal their second-half display arguably deserved, eventually falling to a 2-1 defeat. The visitors can take plenty of encouragement from their improved performance after the break, but the first-half mistakes ultimately proved too costly.
