Building for the generations: The launch of the Staveley MWFC Community Trust
Staveley Miners Welfare is today taking the biggest strategic step in the club’s history.
We are establishing the Staveley MWFC Community Trust as an independent Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) – a move that will allow us to serve Staveley not just as a football club but as a community organisation with the reach, funding and governance to match.
This is something we have been building towards for several decades and comes following the successful reset of our women’s section, the complete clearance of our £250,000 stadium and 3G infrastructure loans and the growth of our teenage educational pathways.
Our foundation – both on the pitch and in the community – has never been stronger and we’re now putting it to work.
What this means for Staveley and beyond
We are uniquely positioned as an organisation to connect with people in ways traditional services cannot – but operating purely as a football club limits how deeply we can serve our town.
Moving to a dedicated CIO structure changes that for the following reasons:
1) Access to funding that wasn’t available to us before
Operating as an independent registered charity allows us to access major grant funding, foundation trusts and Gift Aid that are unavailable to football clubs operating as commercial organisations. Every pound raised will be legally locked and reinvested directly into local community benefits.
2) Beyond football – whole-community wellbeing
Football is our engine – but the Trust is our reach. With our top-tier facilities (including our classrooms, 3G pitch and the newly constructed Trojans Fitness Suite), the Trust will deliver programmes beyond football, including:
- Youth and education: Strengthening our 16-19 BTEC offering, Sheffield Hallam University higher education links and US scholarship pathways via Starbridge Sports;
- Inclusive and disability sport: Launching pan-disability programmes, such as the FA Comets;
- Keeping Staveley active at every age: Fitness, movement and wellbeing sessions for older members of our community.
3) Built to belong to Staveley, permanently
By establishing an independent governance board, the Trust will belong to the Staveley community for generations to come – ensuring that our assets, facilities, and outreach serve local families long into the future.
We are seeking founding trustees
To turn this vision into reality alongside chairman Terry Damms, we are seeking passionate, strategic and community-driven individuals to join our inaugural Board of Trustees.
We are looking to build a balanced, highly skilled board and welcome expressions of interest from individuals with experience in:
- Charity governance and legal compliance;
- Finance, accounting and grant management;
- Community outreach and grassroots sports development;
- Safeguarding, equality and inclusion;
- PR, marketing and stakeholder engagement.
Trustee roles are voluntary, unremunerated governance positions. While prior board experience is welcomed, a genuine commitment to Staveley’s social progress is essential.
